Indications & Dosage

Apigat 5mg also known as best apixaban generic is a factor Xa inhibitor, is prescribed for the following conditions:

  • Stroke and systemic embolism prevention: In patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation.
  • DVT prophylaxis: To prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) after hip or knee replacement surgery.
  • DVT and PE treatment: For treating DVT and PE and reducing the risk of recurrence after initial therapy.

Dosage Guidelines:

  1.      Stroke and systemic embolism risk reduction in nonvalvular atrial fibrillation:
  2.      DVT prophylaxis after hip or knee replacement surgery:
  3.      DVT and PE treatment:
  4.      Risk reduction of recurrent DVT and PE:
  • Standard dose: 5 mg orally twice daily.
  • Adjusted dose: 2.5 mg orally twice daily for patients with any two of the following:
    • Age ≥ 80 years.
    • Body weight ≤ 60 kg.
    • Serum creatinine ≥ 1.5 mg/dL.
  • 2.5 mg orally twice daily.
  • Initial dose: 10 mg orally twice daily for 7 days.
  • Maintenance dose: 5 mg orally twice daily.
  • 2.5 mg orally twice daily.

Side Effects and Precautions:

General Risks:
  • Increased clot risk if stopped suddenly: Stopping Apixaban without medical advice raises the chance of clot formation and stroke. Discuss discontinuation with your doctor.
  • Risk of bleeding: As a blood thinner, Apixaban increases bleeding risks, which can be serious or life-threatening.
Common Symptoms to Monitor:

Contact your doctor if you experience:

  • Unexpected or prolonged bleeding (e.g., gums, nosebleeds, heavy menstrual bleeding).
  • Unusual bruising or signs of internal bleeding (e.g., red/pink/brown urine, tar-like stools, blood in vomit).
  • Persistent dizziness, severe headaches, or joint swelling.
Drug Interactions:

Taking Apixaban alongside the following increases bleeding risk:

  • Aspirin or aspirin-based products.
  • Long-term NSAID use.
  • Blood thinners like warfarin or heparin.
  • SSRIs, SNRIs, or other clot prevention medications.
Special Warnings:
  • Not suitable for patients with artificial heart valves or antiphospholipid syndrome (APS).
  • Spinal/epidural blood clots: Patients undergoing spinal procedures with Apixaban may develop clots causing paralysis. Symptoms include tingling, numbness, or muscle weakness in the legs.
Allergic Reactions:

Seek emergency help if you experience:

  • Chest pain, facial or tongue swelling, difficulty breathing, or fainting.
Other Considerations:
  • Apixaban is not recommended for patients with a history of spinal surgery or complex spinal punctures.
  • Notify your healthcare provider if you develop any skin rash or discomfort that persists.
