Posatral (posaconazole 100 mg) is an antifungal medication that contains the active ingredient posaconazole. This medication is used to prevent and treat various fungal infections. Posaconazole 100 mg works by either killing or inhibiting the growth of certain types of fungi that can lead to infections.

In adults, posaconazole 100 mg can be used to treat different types of fungal infections when other antifungal medications have not been effective or had to be stopped. These infections include those caused by Aspergillus family fungi that did not improve with treatment from amphotericin B or itraconazole or when these medications could not be continued. Additionally, posaconazole 100 mg can treat infections caused by Fusarium family fungi that did not improve with amphotericin B treatment or when amphotericin B could not be continued. Furthermore, it can treat infections caused by fungi that cause chromoblastomycosis and mycetoma that did not improve with itraconazole treatment or when itraconazole could not be continued. Lastly, posaconazole 100 mg can treat infections caused by a fungus called Coccidioides that did not improve with one or more of amphotericin B, itraconazole, or fluconazole, or when these medications could not be continued.

In addition to treatment, posaconazole 100 mg can also be used to prevent fungal infections in adults who are at high risk of developing a fungal infection. These include patients who have a weakened immune system due to chemotherapy for acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) or myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), as well as those receiving high-dose immunosuppressive therapy after a hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT).

Posaconazole Dosage

The standard dosage for posaconazole is 300 mg (three 100 mg gastro-resistant tablets) twice a day on the first day, followed by 300 mg (three 100 mg gastro-resistant tablets) once a day for the remainder of the treatment. The duration of treatment may vary depending on the type of infection and may be adjusted individually by your doctor. Do not modify your dosage or change your treatment plan without consulting your doctor.

When taking this medication: • Swallow the tablet whole with water. • Do not crush, chew, break, or dissolve the tablet. • The tablets may be taken with or without food.
